Synopsis To introduce students to the basic concepts, syntax and structure of the C programming language with relation to embedded software systems.

Learning Objectives
After successful completion of this module a student will:
- have a working knowledge of the syntax and capabilities of the C language
- be able to write C programs
- understand the significance of C programs in the design of embedded systems.

Module Title Embedded Operating Systems
Providing Institution Institute for System Level Integration
Credits 15 credits at level M
Length and Delivery Mode Online distance learning using the "Blackboard" e-learning portal housed on the ISLI server.
Synopsis The aim of this module is to introduce the student to the general embedded software engineering process and some of the specific considerations created by system on chip engineering. The study material and presentations are supported by practical C programming exercises using GNU tools in the Unix environment. Whilst studying this module students may also be given web access to online tools for SoC simulation exercises.

Module Title Sensor Networks

Synopsis The aim of this module is to create an understanding of both the theoretical and practical principles related to embedded systems design using real-time operating systems. The material is supported by practical exercises using the WindRiver VxWorks 5.4 Real-Time Operating System and associated Tornado 2.1 integrated development tools.

Module Title Embedded Networks

In particular, the use of networking and network application technologies will be included. Module Title Programming in C
Providing Institution The University of Manchester

Length and Delivery Mode Internet based distance learning over 12 weeks
Synopsis This course is designed to develop the skills required to enable participants to write programs using the C Programming Language.
The only formal prerequisite is basic computer literacy. However, the course is designed for people with a good general education (e.g. a degree or good 'A' levels). The ability to think logically and solve abstract problems is a prerequisite for computer programming in any language.

Synopsis The course is designed to give students a thorough grasp of the basics of object-oriented programming in Java 1.5. The emphasis is on fundamental principles and their application in practice. Language constructs and library classes are introduced as embodiments or examples of the principles. Best practice is emphasised throughout.
